One of the things that really bothers me about our society (there are so many, how can I choose?) is Hollywood’s portrayal of lesbians. Either you have a the butch les on a motorcycle or you have a totally sexualized version of something that should be beautiful. Take Jennifer’s Body for example. Hot chick turned vampire. Makes out with her best friend. They only have this in the movie to get hormonal teen guys to come the theater and spend 10 bucks on a ticket. But I do enjoy the occasional prod at lesbianism, especially in Family Guy. This is mostly because they are subtly making fun of homophobes which I always appreciate. One of the most amazing gay movies is “Imagine Me and You.” It’s handled really well and it’s just a great love story. It helps that the two lead women are gorgeous. That’ a film that hit it right on the nose, nothing overdone. “Gray Matters” is also pretty quality. That movie really helped me figure out that l was gay. I watched it with my friend when I was just starting to come out to myself. There was even a part at which I teared up. It was a scene in which Grey was in the elevator talking about how she could never be “normal.” I’ll try and find the exact quotation;
Sam: What are you doing?
Gray: I want to die right now. I never want to see another human being as long as I live.
Sam: You’re just coming out.
Gray: I am never coming out of this elevator.
Sam: This is probably the biggest revelation of your entire life. It’s normal to be going nuts. It’s normal.
Gray: I don’t feel normal. I’m sick and tired of everyone saying it’s normal, it’s typical, it’s ordinary. I don’t feel any of those things.
Sam: Well how do you feel?
Gray: Lonely.
Sam: Why?
Gray: Because I’m never going to be able to walk down the street, holding hands with my partner without the rest of the world giving us a look. And me never have the wedding that I once dreamed of and I may never have children. And one day when I die people will never give as much respect to my grieving lover as if she were my husband.
Sam: Gray, it’s not as if you made a choice.
Gray: That’s what terrifies me. It’s so much easier to be someone else.
When I heard those words, it seemed like an embodiment of all the feelings I myself had been repressing. It was pretty powerful.
I posted the clip underneath. The quality isn’t great but it works.
